When you get older you find you have to write things down in order to remember them! So a lot of my blogs are for me to remember things like recipes lol but also to share cool stuff I’ve found or learned!
One of the things I’ve learned is that store bought salad dressing does not agree with my tummy. I love me some salad folks! But no matter how yummy the dressing is, I pay for it later. I’m guessing it’s all those preservatives? For a couple of years now we have been using the most amazing flavor salad dressing that is so simple to make. I just don’t know why we didn’t know to do this before! This is our take on a recipe handed down through various family members that are new to the family. So I have no idea where it originated. We call it the 3-2-1 recipe.
We use a small mason jar to mix the ingredients by putting on the lid and then giving the jar a shake. Then drizzle over your favorite salad. The ingredients seem strange but it works! It’s 3 tbls of sour (vinegar, pickle juice etc), 2 tbls of sweet (sugar, stevia, maple syrup, peach juice etc) and 1 tbls of oil (we use olive oil).
Our favorite combination is pickle juice and maple syrup. Our other favorite is peach juice! Honestly we just go to the fridge and see what sweet and sour combination we can find that’s in a condiment jar where we can snag a couple spoons full of juice to mix with the oil. There seems to be a never ending possibility of combinations. Not to mention most of the “condiment” juices we are using is stuff most people just throw out anyway. I haven’t thrown out pickle juice in forever! Lol
Once you shake it in the mason jar try a sample! Just to make sure you like the flavor combinations. If you don’t like it then dumping that combination out and trying a different combination hasn’t really cost you anything. Better than buying a bottle of dressing at the store only to get it home to find out it tastes nasty and you wasted $5 lol. Just grab a piece of lettuce and dip it in and then sample it… no harm no foul if you want to mix it a different way. So far all the combinations we have tried have been success! We haven’t thrown any out yet that’s for sure!
Sometimes it’s nice to just have a different flavor for the time of year. The peach is especially nice when you need a pick me up on a hot day! We also add things like sliced boiled eggs and cut up chicken tenders sometimes, to add protein to the salad. This dressing goes great with those ingredients too!
Give it a try… you’re not out much if you don’t like it… but if you are like us, then the thought of buying store bought salad dressing (after knowing this recipe) makes us want to gag! Lol we have gotten a bit spoiled with this recipe and have been known to take a small jar into restaurants with us to put on salads with our dinners there too (shhhh don’t tell the management but that’s what purses are for! Lol) . Yeah …. maybe a bit overzealous there… but commercial (processed) salad dressing really does not agree with my tummy! If it’s a restaurant that makes fresh dressing in house I’m ok and more than happy to try it. Most restaurant however use the bottled stuff 😦
Enjoy! And I hope you find lots of various combinations you love just like we have!
