Even with the awning out, it seems like we always end up parking the RV so that the hot afternoon sun hits the side of the RV where the door is located. Our RV has one of those roll up / pull down shades in front of the door on the inside for privacy and sunscreen, but honestly it is a bit inconvenient if you plan on going in and out. Not to mention you have to pull it juuuuusssttttt right to get it to roll back up (which I always have difficulty in doing lol). Then I had a brilliant (but easy) idea for a quick door window sunscreen so the inside of the RV stays cool without overtaxing the air conditioner.
We always keep a good supply of utility magnets in the RV because they come in very handy! We have had these magnets in the RV for years and have used them for so many different things it is surprising! I purchased these at the local hardware store and they came in a box of about 6 magnets for just a few dollars. I tested them in the store to make sure they had a good magnetic strength to them before purchasing, because what is worse than trying to use a magnet and it just falls to the floor because it is too weak?!?!? So always test them out before buying them. Otherwise you are just wasting your money.
I took a random piece of cloth from the sewing room (left over from another project) but you could use any cloth you like as long as it is thin enough for the magnets to still work and hold the cloth up. I would not want to try this with something heavy like a tarp or a quilt, but a tee shirt material would probably work just as well. Place the cloth on the inside of the window and a magnet on top while your assistant (this is a two person job lol) places another magnet on the outside of the window matching up their magnet position with your magnet position on the inside. The magnets are attracted to each other so this is easier to do than it sounds. Just move the outside magnet around in the general vicinity and you will feel the pull and a click when it is in the right spot. The two magnets effectively “sandwich” the cloth and glass of the window between the 2 magnets. I then trimmed the bottom of the cloth with a pair of scissors and voila … done.
Simple, effective, not expensive (zero cost because I already had the items on hand) , and works great! Easy to remove as needed. No fussing with tape or stick on Velcro strips or any of that other nonsense. No more fussing with that roll up shade that you have to pull juuuuusssstttt right to get it to roll back up either! Yay!
Not to mention you can decorate with a cloth of your choice and when you decide to change it up for a different look… super easy! Give it a try and enjoy your camping season. Remember to wear a mask in public spaces and don’t forget to social distance.
