Yes, you read that right lol. With all the stay at home and stop movement requirements due to the Coronavirus, we are taking an extended stay with my dad on his farm. Said farm has a lovely pond but sadly no ducks. So what better way to spend the spring (while social distancing) than raising three baby ducks to eventually take up residence on the pond!
We got the baby ducks from the local feed store. A traditional spring time event of sales of chickens and ducks at the feed stores. Reminds me of Easter as a kid when dad would come home with a duck as our Easter present. Well, we were lucky enough to get the last three ducks! I have to say duck eggs are fabulous! Much better than chicken eggs in my opinion so I’m looking forward to some duck eggs in the future, assuming at least one of these babies is female lol. But roast duck around thanksgiving time is also a favorite of mine as well soooooooo…. it is a farm after all! There are no pets on a farm. Only livestock!

Since we are in the RV doing the full time thing we had to have a place to keep the babies indoors for a couple of weeks until the weather warms up and we get the duck coop finished built. So… the shower it is! Yes we have 3 baby ducks living in our RV shower with us and strangely enough neither dogs nor cat seem to mind the temporary house guests. Good thing we can use the shower in the big house tho! Because ducks are super cute at this stage but can be really messy too!
They require plenty of fresh water and food at all times. A nice clean and dry place to nap. And often their water bowl becomes their swimming pool. So, needless to say, water gets cleaned several times a day as it gets a bit yucky from them swimming in it and rinsing their beaks in it after eating. It is absolutely hysterical to hear them splashing around in their water bowl tho!

My service dog has taken it into her mind that it is now her responsibility to watch over the babies and not let any of the other critters near them. Conestoga Chuck checks on them regularly and insists on making sure they are ok every time we come inside after our walks (even before getting his after walk treat!). They have also started to alert me whenever the ducklings start to move around and chirp and then insist I open the shower door so they can look in on them to make sure they are ok! I do believe they may actually imprint on the dog(s) which will be interesting because one of the dogs also loves to swim in the pond and creek lol

I’ve done some strange and crazy things in my life but I have to admit I never thought I’d be living in an RV with 3 ducks, 2 dogs, a cat and of course my handsome hubby. But I have to admit I’m having the best time ever! I am never at a loss for entertainment that’s for sure! Hopefully soon I won’t be at a loss for some yummy eggs either! Lol … which way better than obsessing over the negativity on the news about the spread of Coronavirus and all the other things going on in the world. Yep… go get a duck for Easter this year and watch something innocent and adorable and super funny grow. Which BTW they grow super fast! At about 5 weeks old they are pretty much full grown! Nature is great like that! Even if said duck happens to be living temporarily in your shower lol and you have to clean out the shower several times a day for a couple weeks 🤪 it is well worth it to enjoy the experience.
