So we got the beef tongue for making dog food in our meat grinder (along with some other meats: see previous post for more info). The goal is to get the large packs of meat, take a few pieces for hubby and myself to eat, and then grind the rest into dog food … because it’s usually way less expensive to buy the family size packs and we home cook for our pups since they need the most healthy meals possible (one is a service dog and the other is a service dog in training). The recipe for our home cooked dog food can be found in previous posts, but Conestoga Chuck’s drool marks on my carpet can attest to his approval of the recipe as well as his soft fur, and clean bill of health from the vet lol
So … I have to warn you, if you are squeamish… you may want to stop reading now and especially not look at the photos lol. We first “skinned the tongue because I don’t want the “membranes” on the outside of the meat getting stuck in my grinder and breaking it. We then cut off the tip of the tongue to save for the humans dinner and used the rest to grind into dog food along with the other meats.

The tip of the tongue weighed 1/2 lb. we placed it in the instant pot along with a chopped onion, a bay leaf, some chili powder and some applewood smoked salt (if you haven’t tried using smoked salt yet please go out and get some… you won’t be sorry!) covered the meat with water and cooked on high manual for 20 minutes. I’m not going to give specific amount here because it depends on the size of meat you are cooking and your personal tastes for spices. So use what you think is good for you, just make sure the meat is fully covered in water.
Next we took the meat out of the Instant pot (ensuring it was cooked all the way thru and pleasantly tender) and cut it into small strips. Placed it in my favorite Corningware pan (I am such a vintage Corningware addict!) along with a can of rotelle and some more smoked salt. Cooked that on medium heat until the juices from the rotelle basically reduced away to nothing (about 5 minutes max) and voila ready to serve and top with your favorite taco toppings! Hubby and I had 4 taco’s each… so that tiny 1/2 lb of meat really went along way! And oh so yummy!!!!

I have to say that my homemade taco meat using regular hamburger (recipe available in a previous post also) always gets rave reviews… but I am inclined to say this dish might be even better lol. It really is worth snagging a bit of that yummy meat from the dog food pile as a special yummy treat for us humans to drool over our dinner like Conestoga Chuck does over his dinner lol. It’s not hard to make and even easier than normal because it’s just a side dish to making the pup his meals for the week 🙂
Eat healthy and avoid vet and Medical bills lol happy cooking everyone! If I won’t eat it, why should my highly trained Service dog eat it… at least that’s my theory. Which is why he gets home cooked meals where the ingredients are human grade quality, fresh, and something I wouldn’t hesitate to eat as well.
