Homemade taco meat recipe

Since I just posted my super secret (giggle giggle) salsa recipe… I figured I might as well add my special homemade taco meat recipe too. Everyone loves this and we make it quite often. It’s inexpensive to make and honestly super yummy! I always have some taco shells at the house as well as the other ingredients, so it’s a quick easy meal that is easy to keep ingredients readily on hand.

In a pan place the following ingredients and cook on medium heat until all the juices have steamed out and the meat is done. I like to use a lid slightly off kilter to let the steam out but keep the heat in and my vintage corningware pot… but use what you have.

1-2 lbs lean ground hamburger (or ground meat of choice) crumbled

1 can of rotelle (I usually get regular rotelle but it comes in mild, hot, and other flavors like cilantro so get the one you like best)

1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder (not garlic salt)

1/2 teaspoon Morton’s nature’s seasons

1/2 teaspoon Morton’s season salt

One tablespoon better than bouillon brand beef stock paste

A dash of applewood smoked salt.

Some grocery stores sell the smoked salt. It can be a bit expensive in regular grocery stores tho. I buy mine from amazon which gives me more for the money. Basically this is regular course grain salt that has been naturally smoked and gives a wonderful smoked flavor to whatever you put it on. We even like it on eggs, pizzas, in soups, on roasts… we use it as a seasoning to get a smoked flavor a lot. Unlike liquid smoke which often gives a bitter aftertaste, especially if you accidentally add to much … smoked salt is the next best thing to actually going out to the fire pit and smoking your food. Well worth the purchase for that awesome smoked flavor.

Now the other ingredients I usually stop and get fresh. Toppings for the tacos of course!

Lettuce

Salsa (see my other post)

Sour cream

Homemade Guacamole

Onion

And whatever else you like to put on your tacos. Along with your taco shell of choice (soft, hard, bowl, flat etc)

Don’t be surprised when you don’t have any leftovers… but think a moment about the ingredients. No preservatives from a season packet etc… all fresh and homemade with the exception of the shells (which honestly are not that hard to make either). Then think a moment about the cost… it’s really a super inexpensive healthy meal. So enjoy your tacos and don’t say I didn’t warn you about them being addictive 🙂 when you stuff yourself full like I always do lol
