RV winter prep for storage

Here in Montana there is a list of things we must accomplish for winter prep, and this year it seems we are in for a little bit of an early winter snow forecasted for next week (our second snow this “fall”). First the lawn sprinklers at the house have to be blown out so they don’t freeze and bust and my wonderful lawn maintenance guys took care of that before the last snowfall thank goodness.

The RV has been in the shop getting winterized. We thought we had a few more weeks but apparently not! So today everyone is rushing to winterize their boats and campers and get them into storage and the RV shops and storage lots are crazy today! Welcome to Montana fall… all three days of it lol. The mad rush to the storage lots has begun! There are absolutely rows upon rows of campers pulling in and parking today! You’d think there was a huge RV rally or concert or something by the looks of it lol

You can pay for inside storage for campers and boats in Montana but you can’t access them again until the spring, and we like to go out to the camper at least monthly to start the engine and generator and check for water leaks etc so we opted for outside storage because we can access the camper then… and we want to do some inside upgrades over the winter (carpentry work) as well.

So outside storage for us this year! We may have to shovel a bit to get to the door lol but it is what it is!

If you are not sure how to winterize your RV yourself it’s best to take it to a dealership and have them do it so you don’t have a lot of expensive repairs in the spring! Fortunately we don’t have a lot of humidity here in Montana (as in… zero humidity on most days) so we don’t really have to worry about running the ac/heater or a fan in the winter to keep the RV from mildewing inside. But if you live anywhere where there is any humidity never let an RV sit without a fan or something circulating the air or you will come back to a moldy nightmare of a mess!

A solar powered room fan would be optimal and amazon has tons of different ones at different price ranges to choose from. That would be my choice for a humid climate if electric hook up was not available at the storage location. Anything to keep the air circulating… combined with some damp rid should do the job nicely.

Well “the kennel” (the name we call our RV) is now ready for winter storage and it does take a while to accomplish so make sure you plan ahead and pay attention to those weather forecasts! Conestoga Chuck requires that we keep his chuck waggin in excellent condition for all those upcoming adventures he has planned for us to take in the spring as soon as all the snow melts… but for now we are bunkering down for a long and cold winters nap.
