Got To Have Kitchen Device: a jar opener that works

This handy little device was originally patented in 1933 and can sometimes be found in antique stores, thrift stores and garage or estate sales for about $10 or less. A new one on amazon Jar opener is also available if you are not fortunate to find a cool older model. They haven’t changed any that I can tell from the original version now that the patent has run out. I have a problem opening jars and it seems to get worse the older I get. I’ve tried other jar openers (jeez this sounds like an infomercial, sorry about that … but I’m being honest here) and this is the only one that works for me. I have very limited hand strength.

I have both the vintage red handle jar opener and the newer white handle versions. I keep one in the house and one in the RV. I can honestly open anything from a soda bottle to a large wide mouth canning jar lid with this thing. It’s great! It was originally intended for canning jars but is extremely versatile. Even hubby sneaks it out when he thinks I’m not looking and uses it on a really difficult jar.

I made the mistake of not packing one in the RV this summer (never again!) and struggled with a jar of mayonnaise for two days (no joke) and then I went out to the local antique store found another one of these and bought it. I opened the (insert nasty word of choice here) mayonnaise jar… and since I already had two jar openers at home I gifted the third to my dad lol. He loves it! He has used it several times since I gave it to him. Funny but he is from the age group that would have originally used this in the kitchen when it was a new product and is very accustomed to home canning foods (and still does) but he said he had never seen one before and didn’t know that’s what it was used for lol. I guess I got a fun and rare opportunity to teach pops something from HIS childhood for a change! Lol

So do yourself a favor and keep an eye out for one of these vintage beauties, you will thank me I am sure… or if you just can’t wait to have one then pop on over and order one on amazonJar opener 🙂 maybe buy 2 so you can have one for the RV as well and teach that mayonnaise jar a lesson for me! Or get 3 and gift one to a parent or friend having hand strength problems. An inexpensive gift that keeps on giving and something they probably don’t already have lol.
