Conestoga Chuck dog food recipe

Conestoga Chuck here. My human makes the best homemade dog food ever! We gobble it up every time! It’s nice to have homemade meals because they are healthy, inexpensive, fresh, and no need to travel with a huge bag of kibble! You can just pick up the ingredients at the local grocery store! And as everyone knows if you run out of kibble and have to try a different brand while traveling… one of two things can happen. We refuse to eat it, or it becomes an explosive situation on the potty breaks (never fun for us or the human). So here is how my human makes our super yummy meals. You can always add a bit of kibble for crunch if you want to. And don’t forget we love carrots and other fruits and veggies as low calorie healthy treats, but make sure you know which fruits and veggies can make us sick before you add them to our diet (like onions and grapes are NOT good for our tummies!)

Conestoga Chuck dog food recipe

– 3 lbs of ground meat (mix and match but make sure no added ingredients that could make us sick. Try looking for a local butcher as they often have the best, freshest and least expensive! Try: hamburger, lamb, bison, venison, turkey, chicken etc. (The local butcher at home makes a ground meat mix just for dogs using beef liver, heart, and tongue which we love!)

The next items aren’t really measured, so you just have to play with the amounts your companion likes. Similar to seasoning human foods: some like it hot and some don’t.

My human uses 1-2 soup spoons (about 1-2 tablespoon worth?) of the following dried items:

Split peas

Wheat germ

Flax meal

Quinoa

Wild rice

Fresh items:

Cut a small sweat potato into chunks, or use a handful of baby carrots instead

In a blender add fresh kale and parsley and some water to make a doggie pesto. Blend on high. My human divides this into pint size jars and uses one pint for this recipe.

2 eggs (whisked)

Add all the above ingredients plus 4 cups water (or enough water to cover everything because the dry ingredients will absorb water… and gravy is always yummy so extra water is fine) in the instant pot.

Cook on manual high pressure for 45-60 minutes (long enough to cook the meat and soften the sweat potatoes). Once finished cooking, use a potato masher to mash the sweat potato and any large chunks of ground meat. You want a “canned dog food” type consistency.

Let cool, and serve same amounts as you normally would with commercial foods (add some kibble for crunch if you like). Place the glass lid on the metal pot and store in the fridge. The recommended storage is no longer than 3 days, same as with human meat dishes, so adjust the ingredients above for 3 days of food depending on your dogs size and eating habits. (Conestoga Chuck and lil bit get served breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals after their humans have eaten)

This is what our human feeds us! And we love it! We also get a small bowl of commercial kibble left out for snacking in case we get hungry in between meals… but honestly we hardly ever touch it!

Our human has also taught us dinner time manners! No begging or bothering the humans while they eat! We sit patiently while our dinner is being served and wait for the ok to begin eating once it is served. Don’t forget to instill good manners at the dinner table! Er… dinner floor? Eh, you get the drift…
